Beautiful
Buffalo by Linda R. Levine & Maria Scrivani
Buffalo, New York
has been called one of the most beautifully-planned cities in the nation.
At the end of the 19th and into the 20th century, America’s greatest
architects, including Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and Stanford
White, built public buildings and private residences for its citizens.
Buffalo also boasts a park-and-parkway system designed by Frederick

Sound
of the Trees
by Robert
Gatewood
An extraordinary
debut that brings together a hypnotic quest, a thrilling Western,
and an unforgettable love story. Set
in the 1930s, The Sound of the Trees tells the story of Trude
Mason, who, seeking to escape a brutal father and a violent past,
sets out with his mother on horseback on a grueling journey through
the extreme desert and mountainous terrain of southwestern New Mexico.
Their destination is Colorado, a place Trude imagines to be abundantly
fertile, wild, and free. But along the way, Trude finds himself in
the clutches of a small New Mexican border town, once again a victim
of brutality and lawlessness, this time in the form of a pitiless
sheriff and his posse. When they arrest and sentence to death a young
woman whose life Trude has saved, he must face an explosive collision
between conscience and self-preservation.

Car-Free
in Buffalo: A Guide to Buffalo's Neighborhoods Suburbs and Public
Transportation
by Michael Lewyn
As the author of this
book, I naturally think it is wonderful. This book isn't just about
public transportation -- it is a neighborhood by neighborhood guide
to Buffalo. I even mention specific stores and restaurants that you
might want to try (though on the negative side, this means some of
my information might be out of date). - Michael Lewyn

City of Light
Erik Brady, USA Today, May 25, 1999
Like Niagara Falls itself, it's breathtaking in its achievement.
Lauren Belfer's first novel is a remarkable blend of murder
mystery, love story, political intrigue and tragedy of manners.
Her story does not meander like the Mississippi. It moves
like the Niagara. The river's famous falls get visitors they
deserve.

Exploring
Niagara : The Complete Guide to Niagara Falls and Vicinity
by Hans Tammemagi,
Allyson Tammemagi
After reading over a dozen books about Niagara Falls and the
region (a hobby of mine), I found this book to be the best of
the lot - for a tourist. It's well organized, offers excellent
photos and maps, and I especially enjoyed the chapters regarding
the Erie Canal in the U.S. and the Welland Canal in Ontario, Canada
- both within a 30 minute drive of the falls. |

New
York Times Book Review
Connie Porter's beautifully realized novel, Imani
All Mine, told in Tasha's voice, is the story of great promise shining
through monstrous obstacles. Porter has created a protagonist
with her own voice and an affirming take on life in Buffalo's inner
city where guns kill the innocent and where teenagers too often end
up having babies. |

number and variety of architectural masterpieces from the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Examples include:
Adler and Sullivan's Prudential building, H.H. Richardson's
massive Buffalo State Hospital, Richard Upjohn's St. Paul's
Episcopal Cathedral, five Prairie Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright,
and buildings by Daniel Burnham, Albert Kahn, and the firms
of McKim.

A
Signal Victory: The Lake Erie Campaign, 1812-1813
by David Curtis
Skaggs, Gerard Atloff, Gerard T. Altoff
The Battle of Lake
Erie on 10 September 1813 is considered by many to be the
most important naval confrontation of the War of 1812. Made
famous by the American fleet commander Oliver Hazard Perry's
comment, "We have met the enemy and they are ours,"
the battle marked the U.S. Navy's first successful fleet action
and was one of the rare occasions when the Royal Navy surrendered
an entire squadron.

I have
read more than a few books which claim to represent the history
of the Niagara Falls. Of all these books, this is the best. It covers
the history of Niagara Falls thematically and chronologically; breaking
down the history of the city into important periods industrially
and technologically. Included in it are sections dealing with the
impact of the railroads, as well as the impact of hydro power. In
my opinion, it was an excellent book, and well worth the price.

Kriner takes a look at the dark side of Niagara Falls in

lost than saved in this book. Nearly 90 tragedies, some involving
multiple loss of life, but many involving suicides, are collected
here. So are about a dozen heroic rescues and a couple of mysteries.
