Here's the very first image we were able to take on "the morning after." It's a snapshot of Argyle Park, a residential street in Buffalo, taken on October 13, 2006. While the majority of the snow had already fallen, there was still more to come, and many more tree limbs still to fall. Why? The snow storm came before most of the trees had lost their leaves. The leaves allowed snow to accumulate and under the weight of heavy snow, branches snapped, and trees cracked and split apart. The sound at times resembled muted gun fire.

    Please Note:
The photos in this archive are an attempt to depict the impact of the storm of October 2006 on the trees of Buffalo. Please view not only this section which includes the West Side of Buffalo, Delaware Avenue and Richnmond near Klienhands Music Hall, but also the other sections of the Archive (near The Albright Knox, Forrest Lawn and Delaware Park), and you discover why many refer to the heartbreaking event as "Aborgeddon." The damage has been so extensive that in February, five months after the storm, you can still find tree limbs that have yet to be cleared away.

Streets driving ban was redundant for the most part on Oct 13th, since getting off your street was an on-foot propostion except for 4-wheel drive. Of course, four footed creatures had an even easier time of it (although not a safe time of it). The problem, of course, was not mobility however, but the downed power lines. Loss of power was eventually to become the one of the big stories from this storm.

Some people were oblivious to the driving ban, and drove off in search of candles and batteries (not a bad idea in view of what followed). Most of us stayed put (for days).

Oct 16th. Berkeley Place. Tree limbs in the street. Roads are mostly clear of snow, but driving ban continues, mostly due to downed power lines.
