Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park in February of 2007 shows that snowfall was below average, as it has been, actually for quite some time. But whose counting?

(New SNOW STORM possible for Dec 16th - we'll post some scenes from the park soon )

Incidentally, Buffalo winters are suppose to have a lot of snow. No doubt someone forgot to tell Mother Nature. Just about everywhere else in New York State got more snow than Buffalo (city limits) this year. In fact, except for unexpected snow fall during the October 13th Arborgeddeon tragedy (see our October 13 Storm Galleries), winter has been cold but without much of the white stuff. Christmas was anything but white in 2007. Schools have been closed, but only due to extreme cold artic air that's blown down from Canada. And when it has been cold here, it's been cold elsewhere, even nationally.

Gathering snowfall statistics is neither easy nor inexpensive. But in doing research, one has to wonder why the Buffalo Metro area continues to have such a "snowy" reputation. New York State cities like Rochester and Syracuse do receive a good deal more snow than Buffalo, and yet you never hear those cities mentioned over Buffalo, which remains, in the public's mind, the snow capital of New York.

The big question is where these database organizations measure snowfall. Are they measuring Buffalo's snowfall in the metro area, at the Buffalo Airport, or in the Greater Buffalo Area (which can up to thirty to forty minutes from the Buffalo Metro Area). Even the Buffalo Airport receives a good deal more snow than residential North Buffalo or Buffalo's fashionable "Westside." Orchard Park, the site of Buffalo's football stadium, can receive double or triple what a Buffalo metro area snowfall might be. And if you venture another fifteen to twenty minutes further south, you might find up to four times the snowfall of a snowy day in Buffalo. When these databases talk about Buffalo's snowfall, are they being honest about how much snow falls in the city of Buffalo? We seriously doubt it.
